Tribute to Dr. William R. Wells

October 20, 2009

Founding Dean Honored

The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering concluded it's 20 year anniversary with a celebration to the service of their founding dean, the late Dr. William R. Wells.

Complete with a mini football field recognizing the family's 40-yeard line season football tickets, the UNLV marching band, a balloon drop, and several stories about Dr. Wells and his ability to convene  Las Vegas' most influential people to dedicate themselves to the engineering college, Wells was remembered by many during the inaugrual 2009 college Homecoming reception.

The crowning moment was when the student study area known as the "Great Hall" was renamed the "Dr. William R. Wells Great Hall."  This space in building A of the Thomas T. Beam Engineering Complex was the favorite space of Dean Wells.  He even hosted many family events in this space.  The re-naming was approved by UNLV President, Neal Smatresk and NSHE Chancellor, Dan Kalich. The re-naming was a complete surprise to the family.

A photo gallery will be posted to the college Homecoming page shortly. http://engineering.unlv.edu/alumni/homecoming.html
